Begins in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and ends in Washington, DC.
Day 1: Arrive Philadelphia
Depart the UK on your chosen scheduled flight to Philadelphia. Upon arrival, a transfer to your hotel, the Sofitel Philadelphia, is included. This evening meet up with your fellow Tauck travellers for a welcome reception and dinner.
Day 2 : Philadelphia
Steeped in history, Philadelphia combines the old with the new. Enjoy a day exploring the many attractions. Tour Independence Hall, ride a horse-drawn carriage along cobblestone streets, see Liberty Bell and visit the National Constitution Centre.
Day 3: Amish Country & Gettysburg
Travel through rolling Pennsylvania farmland to Lancaster County for a guided tour that reveals the cultural traditions of the Amish. Continue on to Gettysburg National Military Park for a visit to the amazing interpretive center and the Gettysburg Museum of the American Civil War which features 12 exhibit galleries. Following dinner, a storyteller recounts the harrowing experience of civilians trapped in the town of Gettysburg during the ferocious fighting.
Day 4: Harper’s Ferry & Shenandoah National Park
A morning drive with a Gettysburg expert takes you through some of the battlefields, viewing pivotal sites and hearing their stories. Travel on to Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, where you’ll visit to the site of John Brown’s failed 1859 raid on the town’s federal arsenal. Later, ride the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the gorgeous Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park.
Day 5: Monticello & Charlottesville
Today you travel to Charlottesville for a visit to the third U.S. President Thomas Jefferson’s beloved Monticello, hilltop house. After lunch featuring colonial fare and servers in 18th-century period attire, visit the University of Virginia’s landmark Rotunda and Grounds. You’ll end the afternoon with a private presentation on “Slavery, the Plantation and the Civil War” by Dr. Leni Sorensen.
Day 6: Richmond & Jamestown
Meet with Richmond Civil War historian and author Mark Howell, who share insights about the impact of the Civil War in Virginia. Next, you’ll gain further insights into Union, Confederate and African American viewpoints when you visit Historic Tredegar and the Tredegar Iron Works. Following lunch, travel to Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.
Day 7: Colonial Williamsburg
Colonial Williamsburg is yours to explore as you please. Discover the recreated cobblestone streets which bring a bygone era back to life. Encounter local residents, from artisans and tradespeople to militiamen and ordinary citizens. Visit authentically restored buildings such as the Governor’s Palace, Raleigh Tavern and Bruton Parish Church.
Day 8: Washington DC
This morning visit magnificent Mount Vernon, the estate of America’s first president, George Washington. Overlooking the Potomac River; explore the state-of-the-art interactive museum, the 18th-century mansion and landscaped grounds. You’ll have a late afternoon arrival in Washington, DC, and dine at a local restaurant.
Day 9: Washington DC
Today you’ll start with a sightseeing tour of iconic Washington sights, including the White House, Capitol Hill, the National Mall, the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial. On a visit to the Lincoln Memorial, you’ll have an opportunity to see the poignant memorials to those who served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.
Day 10: Washington DC
This morning it’s an early admission to the Rotunda of the National Archives for a private viewing of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The afternoon is free for you to take in more attractions, or perhaps go shopping.
Day 11: Journey Home
Time for some last minute shopping before you transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
