Les Deux Alpes
Spread out along the valley in this historic and charming village, the lifts are every few hundred yards, so you are never far away from one. Ski slopes run down both sides of the resort, which sits in a high altitude valley joining the 'two alps' of Venosc and Mont de Lans. The resort is ideal for non-skiers, as it gives access to both the glacier and Venosc by gondola. A funicular passes through the ice to La Meije glacier (3570 metres) there are breathtaking views and superb snow conditions.
One of France’s oldest ski resorts, this vibrant and fashionable winter sports paradise will not disappoint. Situated in the French département of Isère, where the northern and southern Alps meet, Les Deux Alpes offers 220kms of pisted runs.
At the heart of the resort – or rather, way above the resort itself – is the La Meije glacier, the largest skiable glacier in Europe. Not only does this guarantee year-round skiing (summer skiers should aim to start early as the snow can turn to slush in the afternoon) but it gives the resort an upside-down feel as the less challenging and more forgiving runs – and arguably most exhilarating – can be found up high on the glacier. One superb run can take you on a 2,300m journey from the glacier to the village of Mont de Lans without once needing a ski lift. While some of the trickier runs are found on the lower slopes leading back to resort, there is also a long and comfortable ‘green’ road that gently winds its way down the mountain.
The Freestyle Land snowpark is exceptional and constantly evolving to guarantee fun and thrills for freestyle skiers and boarders of all abilities. For something a little more unusual, why not try a spot of night skiing (every Wednesday during the French winter holidays).
Les Deux Alpes prides itself on how well it caters for families. It was awarded the prestigious Famille Plus label in 2009, an accolade that acknowledges their commitment to providing top quality services and facilities for children and families.
There is an incredible range of eating options, from themed restaurants to haute cuisine, enough to satisfy the greatest appetite after a day’s absorbing skiing. Not to mention a dizzying array of bars and clubs to keep you going to the early hours – if you’ve still got the energy!
