Day 2 – 7: Rupit

The medieval village of Rupit sits in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees, on the banks of the river Rupit, surrounded by superb, wild scenery. The region is rich in history and has limestone escarpments and quite breath-taking views of the Collsacabra mountains, reaching up to 1300m. It’s an ideal centre for exploring truly wild countryside with beautiful natural scenery, woodland meadows, valleys, waterfalls and even extinct volcanoes, which can be found in the Garrotxa Natural Park. The diverse, ever changing landscape, quiet wilderness and coupled with glimpses of the “real Spain” offers a wonderful week walking. We can also sample some traditional food and wines during our stay.

Below you will find an example of the walking programme we plan to offer:

Salt de Sallent: A gradual climb out of Rupit takes us to a viewpoint over the village before we traverse down to the Mirador de Basses and tombs of Basses. The beauty of the walk is the Salt de Sallent waterfall, which plunges 100ft down the limestone escarpment. We return to the village via a lovely shaded riverside path. 7.5kms/4.5m; A/D 420m; 4.5 hours

La Salut: A relatively easy walk through lovely beech and oak woods arriving at the Sanctuary La Salut, where you are rewarded with an amazing view over the Garrotxa Volcanic area and the Pyrennes beyond. 12.5kms/8m; A/D 380m; 5 hours

Tavertet: This is a beautiful walk with a gradual ascent up through the forest., eventually coming out onto the Cingles de Tavertet (sheer limestone escarpment) with far reaching views down the Sau Valley and beyond. Walk along the top of the escarpment and into Tavertet, which some houses dating back to 12th century and breathtaking views over the valley and the reservoir of the Sau. We then return to Rupit along the escarpment of Cingles de L’Avenc A beautiful walk all the way back to Rupit. 15kms/9 miles; A450m/D100m; 5 hours

Garrotxa Natural Park: A totally different walk from the previous walks, we are now in the volcanic region of Catalonia. A walk down into the crater of Santa Margarida takes us to the Romanasque church of Santa Margarida,. from where we continue walking into the Medieval village of Santa Pau. 7.50kms/4.5m; A248m/D293m; 2 hours

Falgars: A real gem of a walk to the highest mountain in the Collescabra region the Cabrera at a height of 1307m. The path begins at Falgars where there are outstanding views in all directions across the valley to the Pyrennes in the North and to the south views down to Montseny and Pedraforca. The final ascent take us to the Mare de Deu Sanctuary situated on a rocky spur which appears inaccessible – but we get there! 12kms/8m; A429m/D460m; 5.5 hours

There will be a free day during the week where you may want to visit the local towns of Olot or Vic.
