Itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Sofia
Fly to Sofia with British Airways. Transfer to the hotel and take a short orientation walk. After a welcome dinner in a local restaurant, stay 2 nights at Arena di Serdica Hotel. Meals Included: Dinner.

Day 2: Sofia

You will take a walking tour of Sofia and visit the impressive Alexander Nevski Memorial Cathedral Pass the former royal palace, now the National Art Gallery and Ethnographic Museum. In the afternoon, visit the National Historical Museum. The museum contains the celebrated Thracian treasures. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 3: Troyan monastery & Veliko Tarnovo

You will be driven over the Balkan mountain range to Troyan monastery. In the afternoon, continue to Veliko Tarnovo, where there will be time for a walk through the old streets. You will stay 2 nights at Meridian Hotel Bolyarski. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 4: Veliko Tarnovo • Arbanasi

In the morning walk up to the Tsarevets and then visit the Konstantsalieva House, a ‘museum house'. In the afternoon, return to Veliko Tarnovo to visit the restored medieval Church of St Peter and St Paul. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 5: Shipka • Kazanluk • Plovdiv

You will be driven south into the Balkan range to the of the Shipka Pass. At the foot of the mountain, pass the Shipka Memorial Church, and then proceed to nearby Kazanluk to see the Thracian tomb and visit the Archaeological Museum. Then, an afternoon drive to Plovdiv, Bulgaria's second city, for 2 nights at Ramada Plovdiv Trimontium Hotel. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 6: Plovdiv • Bachkovo monastery

You will embark on a walking tour through the streets of old Plovdiv and see the remains of the Byzantine city walls and well-preserved timbered town houses dating from the end of the Ottoman period. Visit the Church of St Constantine and St Helena and one of the elegant ‘museum houses'. In the afternoon, drive a short distance into the Rhodope mountains to the 11th-century Bachkovo monastery. There is an optional evening visit to a local winery for wine tasting and dinner. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 7: Koprivshtitsa • Sofia

Drive to Koprivshtitsa, a conservation village situated among the wooded hills of the Sredna Gora. Explore the traditional streets on foot and visit one or two of the numerous 19th-century wooden museum houses. In the afternoon return to Sofia and stay 2 nights at Arena di Serdica Hotel. Meals Included: Breakfast.

Day 8: Rila monastery

Full-day visit to Rila, and visit to the monastery. Then it's a farewell dinner in a local restaurant accompanied by a lively folklore display and traditional music. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner.

Day 9: Boyana • Fly to London

Morning visit to the tiny, medieval church at Boyana, on the southern outskirts of Sofia, then transfer to the airport for a flight back to London. Meals Included: Breakfast.
