Day 1: Fly to Sofia

Fly from London (regional connections available) to Sofia with British Airways. Transfer to the Rosslyn Central Park Hotel for 2 nights. Free time to explore the city. Evening welcome drink.

Day 2: Sofia 

Morning walking tour including a visit to the Roman ruins of Serdica and the multi-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. Afternoon at leisure. Perhaps visit the National Historical Museum, with its collection of Thracian treasures of gold and silver.

Day 3: Rila monastery • Plovdiv

Full-day visit to the Rila monastery. This Unesco-listed 10th-century complex consists of a church decorated in colourful medieval frescos and an imposing courtyard of wooden galleries and balconies.

Day 4: Plovdiv

Walking tour of Old Plovdiv. As Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, it is an intriguing mix of ancient Roman ruins, 19th-century mansions and modern coffee houses.

Day 5: Nessebâr • Varna

Early departure from Plovdiv to the Black Sea and the pretty, historical town of Nessebâr. Located on an islet just off the coast, it is known for its collection of ruined churches. 

Day 6: Varna

Morning sightseeing tour of Bulgaria’s maritime capital, including the Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral, the Archaeological Museum and the huge Monument of Bulgarian-Soviet Friendship, high above the city. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 7: Shumen • Veliko Târnovo

Transfer to Veliko Târnovo via Shumen and the Monument to 1,300 Years of Bulgaria. This colossal cubist monument was completed in 1981 and depicts kings and heroes from Bulgarian history. 

Day 8: Veliko Târnovo

Morning walking tour of Veliko Târnovo, including Tsarevets fortress, citadel of the Second Bulgarian Empire, and a visit to the village of Arbanassi. Afternoon at leisure to relax and enjoy this laid-back university town.

Day 9: Shipka • Sofia

Return to Sofia via the Shipka Pass, visiting the ghostly Buzludzha monument. This huge saucershaped building at the summit of Buzludzha peak was originally conceived as a socialist assembly hall.

Day 10: Sofia • Fly to London

Morning transfer to the airport and fly to London.
