Lanzarote Holidays
An other-worldly island of black and reddish rocks, Lanzarote is a popular destination for cycling, running and swimming, not to mention every watersport imaginable. Lanzarote is famous for its beach holidays, with two of the best being the white sand bay of Papagayo and La Francesco, the perfect location for sunbathing, swimming and generally taking it easy, but a must-see is the extraordinary black sand beach of Playa Quemada, with sands surprisingly soft and silky. The island’s volcanic soils have resulted in a unique ecosystem and geology, including 300 volcanic cones. With an enviable climate, world class beaches, cultural treasures and dramatic natural beauty, Lanzarote is a perfect holiday destination at any time of year.
Lanzarote’s expansive landscapes include pristine beaches, interesting sights and the occasional bucolic, palm-filled valley juxtaposed with surreal, crinkly black lava fields. Head to Timanfaya National Park for some of the most spectacular views in the Canary Islands, and the opportunity to enjoy steaks and fish cooked by the heat of the volcano. For something equally unusual, a visit to Green Caves is highly recommended, a lava cave that was once a shelter from pirates, where molten magma has solidified into twisted shapes. Or why not take a submarine safari on an actual yellow submarine, where you can explore the underwater delights that surround the island. Be sure to try some of the fine wines produced in La Geria, in the centre of the island, which taste especially good as you’re catching the sun sink below the horizon.
