Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Fly to Kochi

Fly from London (regional connections available) to Kochi, via Dubai, with Emirates. 

Day 2: Kochi

Early morning arrival and check in to the Taj Malabar Resort & Spa for 2 nights. After settling in, explore Fort Kochi by tuk-tuk. Discover the narrow streets of the old town and see the cantilevered fishing nets, the 16th century Portuguese-built Mattancherry Palace and the church of St Francis. Evening welcome dinner at hotel. 

Day 3: Kochi

Spend the morning at the village of Kumbalanghi to learn about life in rural Kerala. The village has been set up to preserve and uphold ancient crafts such as coir making, weaving, cigar making and pottery as well as traditional fishing techniques. Observe and partake in a variety of activities before having lunch overlooking the backwaters. Afternoon at leisure to explore Kochi independently before visiting a Kathakali dance studio to see a traditional performance. Arrive early to see the performers apply their colourful makeup.

Day 4: Thekkady

Travel through endless green hilly scenery to Thekkady, a region abundant with spice plantations and the gateway to Periyar National Park, south India’s most popular wildlife reserve. Visit a private spice plantation before a late afternoon cooking lesson to learn the secrets of traditional Kerala cuisine. Stay 2 nights at Spice Village in individual chalet-style bungalows with elephant grass thatched roofs.

Day 5: Thekkady

Early-morning nature walk in Periyar National Park. While tiger sightings are unlikely, the walk is beautiful, taking you through tribal communities, grasslands and deciduous forest, providing excellent opportunities to watch the resident birdlife. Evening Kalaripayattu performance. 

Day 6: Kumarakom, Backwaters

Head to Kumarakom, an idyllic backwater fishing village located on Kerala’s largest lake – Vembanad. Board a traditional houseboat for lunch and drift through the canals and backwaters, where you will see rural life unchanged for centuries. Spend 2 nights at the lakeside Aveda Resort & Spa. 

Day 7: Kumarakom, Backwaters

Explore the island of Kumarakom on a gentle bicycle ride, passing narrow, palm-fringed canals that wind their way through the vast expanse of paddy fields and neat, tiny hamlets. Afternoon at leisure.

Day 8: Kovalam

Travel to Kovalam, where the broad, palmfringed beaches are among the finest in India. Spend 2 nights at Taj Green Cove Resort & Spa, where the Jiva Spa offers an extensive range of ayurvedic treatments.

Day 9: Kovalam • Trivandrum

Morning exploration of the nearby town of Trivandrum including visits to the exquisite Palace Museum and the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Afternoon at leisure before an evening farewell dinner at the hotel.

Day 10: Fly home

Transfer to Trivandrum airport for your flight to London, via Dubai, with Emirates.

Spice Village, Thekkady

Set amidst spice plantations, Thekkady is known for its spices and the Periyar Wildlife Reserve. Spice Village is close to the game reserve and comprises individual cottages set amid a landscaped spice garden. The resort has a swimming pool, games facilities and an excellent restaurant. Ayurvedic treatment is also available on site. Each cottage has en suite facilities and activities can include visits to the game reserve, treks in the nearby spice and tea plantations. 

Vivanta by Taj - Kovalam, Kovalam

Sprawled across 10 acres of land, Vivanta by Taj - Kovalam (previously the Taj Green Cove Resort) is located on a hillock facing the sea. The granite stone cottages, with elephant grass thatched rooftops are light, airy and have modern amenities. A few cottages also have a private balcony with some of them overlooking the hill while others offer a panoramic view of the sea. Other facilities include a speciality restaurant, which serves curries from different parts of the country, a coffee shop and a bar. In addition the 'Jiva Spa' offers a range of treatments inspired by traditional Indian therapies.

Vivanta by Taj - Malabar is situated on Willingdon Island, with magnificent views of Kochi (Cochin) harbour and beautiful backwaters. The hotel consists of 96 rooms including suites, all with air-conditioning, satellite television, and en suite bathroom. Restaurants include the Rice Boat, serving Keralan seafood specialties, the Waterfront Café offering Indian and Continental Cuisine, and Kochi’s only Thai restaurant.
