Days 1-2: UK – Shanghai

Fly overnight to the cosmopolitan city of Shanghai, also known as the ‘Paris of the East’. You will be met at Shanghai’s Pudong Airport in the arrivals hall by your Local Guide and/or National Escort from Wendy Wu Tours. A tour introduction will be held in the hotel later that day or the following day – this is simply an opportunity for your group to meet and learn more about travelling in China.

Day 3: Shanghai

Sightseeing today includes a stroll through the beautiful Yu Gardens – built for the parents of Pan Yunduan, a government officer of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) as a place for them to enjoy a happy and tranquil time in their old age – and the Old Town, as well as a visit to the Shanghai Museum located in the center of Shanghai in People’s Square, which houses over 120,000 pieces of bronze, coins, jade, ceramics, paintings and calligraphy. The exterior design of a square base and the round dome symbolizes the ancient idea of a round heaven and a square land!

We also walk along the famous Bund with its colonial architecture and explore the restored Xintiandi area with its unique 1920’s style shikumen buildings – created by converting residential blocks into a multi-functional entertainment, retail and dining centre flowing with boutiques, cafes, restaurants and bars of an international standard.
In the evening, enjoy a cruise on the panoramic Huangpu River, the most important shipping artery of Shanghai, where the historic Bund and the futuristic Pudong come face-to-face.

Day 4: Modern Pudong

Spend your morning explore the modern Pudong area of the city before flying to Yichang where you will board the cruise ship.

Days 5-7: Yangtze River Cruise

Enjoy a tour of the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest hydropower project, before cruising upstream through some of the most dramatic scenery in the world. Over the next three days, we will take a side-trip to the striking Shennong Stream in a pea-pod boat, a unique method for viewing the natural scenery, or visit the Lesser Three Gorges. We also enjoy various shore excursions along the way, including the ‘Ghost City’ of Fengdu with its captivating temples.

Day 8: Chongqing – Chengdu

Disembark from our cruise vessel this morning and transfer to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. The area is renowned for its lush landscapes and cuisine. Enjoy a delicious Sichuan meal in the evening.

Day 9: Chengdu – Xian

Visit the famous Panda Reserve to see these adorable animals being reared in wooded surroundings reminiscent of their natural habitat. Later, fly to the former ancient capital of Xian. In the evening we will enjoy a traditional Shui Jiao dumpling meal followed by a performance of Tang Dynasty dancing, one of the symbols of its culture when the dynasty was at the pinnacle of splendour and power.

Day 10: Xian

Visit one of the most important archaological discoveries of the 20th century – the Terracotta Warriors – the figures include warriors, chariots, horses, officials, acrobats, strongmen and musician – followed by a walk along the Ancient City Wall.

Day 11: Xian – Beijing

Visit the Little Wild Goose Pagoda, one of two significant pagodas in the city of Xi’an and the renowned Shaanxi Museum which is home to thousands of priceless relics. We also stroll through the lively Muslim Quarter, past the Great Mosque to explore the Islamic food markets before flying to Beijing. In the evening, enjoy a fascinating Chinese Acrobatic show.

Day 12: Beijing

Enjoy a full day of sightseeing which includes a stroll through Tiananmen Square, past Chairman Mao’s Mausoleum – the final resting place of Mao Zedong, Chairman of the Politburo of the Communist Party of China – to the treasure-filled Forbidden City, which has the largest and best preserved collection of ancient buildings in China from the Ming and Qing Dynasties and houses over 8,000 rooms. We also tour the exquisite Summer Palace, featuring a variety of palaces, gardens and other ancient-style architectural structures.

Day 13: The Great Wall

Walk on the Great Wall to appreciate 2,000 years of historical significance whilst admiring the panoramic views. The Great Wall is China’s most iconic attraction, which stretches over 3,000 miles to the Gobi Desert. We also visit the unique Temple of Heaven – literally the Altar of Heaven.
