This self drive group tour takes you around the coast of Cape Town, through the heart of the country and to Kruger National Park where you will experience first hand an African adventure. Visit the wildlife from the penguins and seals of the coast to the lions and elephants on a safari.

Cox & Kings South Africa: Cape to Kruger Itinerary

Day 1 Fly to Cape Town

Fly overnight from London to Cape Town with British Airways.


Day 2 Cape Town

Arrive into Cape Town and transfer to Pepperclub Hotel (or similar) for 4 nights. Spend the rest of the day at leisure or take optional excursions, see pages 8-9 for suggestions.

Day 3 Cape Town

Morning at leisure. Afternoon tour of Cape Town including an ascent up Table Mountain on the cable-car (weather permitting), the Company Gardens, the South Africa Museum, the Castle of Good Hope and the vibrant and arty flea market in Greenmarket Square. 
Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 4 Cape Point & the Cape Peninsula

Full-day tour of Cape Point and the peninsula. Travel along the Atlantic Seaboard via Sea Point, Clifton and Camps Bay, stopping at lookout points along this stunning coastline. Continue the tour to Hout Bay, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve before lunch (not included). Continue to Simon's Town with its charming Victorian architecture, a naval base and home to a large penguin colony at Boulders Beach. The final visit is to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, renowned for its beauty and diversity of Cape flora. Meals Included: Breakfast


Day 5 Cape Winelands 

Full-day tour of the Cape Winelands. Drive through through superb mountain ranges, vineyards and traditional Cape Dutch homesteads. Stops include Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl (time-permitting) and includes wine tasting.

Day 6 To Oudtshoorn via Barrydale

Depart Cape Town and travel along Route 62. Stop at the town of Barrydale, a small town surrounded by the Langeberg mountain range, for lunch (not included). Continue to Oudtshoorn – the ‘feather capital of the world' – and visit a working ostrich farm for a guided tour. Stay at De Opstal Country Lodge for one night. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 7 To Plettenberg Bay

Morning tour of the Cango Caves. Drive to Knysna and spend some time at leisure at the waterfront, with its boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. Continue to The Crags near Plettenberg Bay and take a cruise up the Keurbooms river. Stay 2 nights at Hog Hollow Country House (or similar) for a 2-night stay. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 8 Plettenberg Bay

Morning visit to the Elephant Sanctuary, an opportunity to touch, feed and photograph the elephants. After lunch (not included), travel to Plettenberg Bay for a visit to Birds of Eden, the largest free-flight bird aviary in the world, with an opportunity to learn about these fascinating creatures. The rest of the day is at leisure. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 9 To Port Elizabeth

Drive along the final leg of the Garden Route to Tsitsikamma National Park, well-known for its indigenous high forests and dramatic coastline. Take a walk along the suspension bridge across the Storms River mouth gorge, which offers incredible views. Continue towards Port Elizabeth and stay overnight at Radisson Blu Port Elizabeth (or similar). Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 10 Fly to Johannesburg

In the morning fly to Johannesburg and transfer to Protea Hotel Balalaika (or similar) for a 2-night stay. Afternoon city tour including the City Hall, Newtown Cultural Precinct and Maboneng Precinct. Visit the Ghandi Memorial and the Carlton Centre for a bird's-eye view of Johannesburg. Meals Included: Breakfast

Day 11 Johannesburg

Morning visit to Soweto township, the name itself being an abbreviation for ‘South Western townships'. It is from here that most of the struggle was fought against the injustices of the apartheid regime and there are several sites of historical importance. Enjoy lunch followed by a visit to the Apartheid Museum, which tells the history of 20th-century South Africa, dominated by the apartheid regime and the struggles of Nelson Mandela, and others, to overcome it. Meals Included: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 12 To Hazyview

Drive to Hazyview via the scenic Panorama Route with stops along the way for views of the 33-km-long gorge of the Blyde River Canyon. Time and weather permitting, stop at God's Window before arriving at Perry's Bridge Hollow (or similar) for an overnight stay. Meals Included: Breakfast & Dinner

Day 13 To Kruger National Park

Drive to the Kruger National Park, the flagship of the South African national parks. Stay 2 nights at Honeyguide Tented Safari Camp (or similar) in the Manyeleti Private Reserve. There are a varying range of activities including wildlife drives and walks. Meals Included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 14 Kruger National Park

Morning and afternoon wildlife activities. Meals IncludedBreakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 15 Fly to London via Johannesburg

Early morning wildlife viewing activity (dependant on the time available). After breakfast, transfer to Hoedspruit airport for your flight to London via Johannesburg with British Airways. Meals Included: Breakfast
