Much of Madagascar’s exotic flora and fauna is found nowhere else on Earth. This tour offers an opportunity to discover the island’s extraordinary wildlife, natural history, stunning scenery, idyllic beaches and fascinating culture, which is based on a mix of Christianity and ancient spiritual beliefs. This tour is well paced, allowing for a wildlife focus in Andasibe, Ranomafana and Isalo National Parks.

Day 1: Fly to Antananarivo via Addis Ababa

Overnight flight from London (regional connections available) to Antananarivo, via Addis Ababa, with Ethiopian Airways.

Day 2: Andasibe • Analamazaotra Reserve

Arrive early in the afternoon and transfer to your hotel. After welcome drinks and dinner, take a night walk to Analamazaotra Reserve. Overnight at Andasibe Hotel (or similar).

Day 3: Andasibe • Vakona Private Reserve • Analamazaotra Reserve

Morning walk in Andasibe. Return to the lodge for lunch. Visit Lemur Island in Vakona Private Reserve, a small island sanctuary for lemurs. Afternoon walk in Andasibe. After dinner, take a second night walk to the Analamazaotra Reserve. Stay overnight at Andasibe Hotel (or similar)

Day 4: Mantadia National Park (or Mitsinjo forest)

Full-day walk through the primary forest of Mantadia National Park. The beautiful scenery is home to the black and white ruffed lemur, the diademed sifaka, Parson’s chameleon and a wide variety of frogs. Alternatively, for the less active, walk in Mitsinjo Reserve and plant an endemic tree as part of the forest’s reforestation project.

Day 5: Antananarivo

Morning drive back to Antananarivo. Stay 1 night at Le Royal Palissandre (or similar). Afternoon city tour including the hills of the royal palaces and the botanical and zoological garden of Tsimbazaza. Special chef’s dinner in the evening.

Day 6: Antsahabe • Antsirabe

Drive to Antsahabe, a village typical of the Merina tribe. After lunch, continue to the spa town of Antsirabe and stay 1 night at Couleur Café Hotel (or similar). Afternoon tour of Antsirabe, centre of the gem trade and home to hundreds of poussepousse (rickshaws), a legacy of Chinese labour imported to work on the railways.

Day 7: Ambositra • Ranomafana

Continue south to Ambositra, known as Madagascar’s handicraft and wood-carving capital. Following a typical Malagasy lunch accompanied by folklore entertainment, continue to Ranomafana. Stay overnight at Thermal Hotel (or similar). Evening walk in search of nocturnal species.

Day 8: Ranomafana

Morning walk in the Ranomafana National Park where you can spot three species of bamboo lemur: the grey, the golden and the greater. Endemic birding in the park is also excellent. Afternoon visit to Tanala village.

Day 9: Ranomafana

Enjoy a morning walk in the national park, before an afternoon visit to the Ranomafana Aboretum, home to hundreds of rare tree species. This evening, search for nocturnal species. Stay overnight at Hotel Thermal.

Day 10: Fianarantsoa • Ambalavao • Ranohira

Morning drive via Fianarantsoa, the Betsileo tribe’s capital, to the vineyard of Lazan’ny Betsileo. Continue to Ambalavao. Visit the Antemoro paper factory and the Anja Reserve, where ring-tailed lemurs are often spotted. Continue to Ranohira and stay 3 nights at Relais de la Reine (or similar).

Day 11 – 12: Isalo National Park

Spend the next 2 days exploring the spectacular sandstone landscapes of Isalo National Park. Seek out flora and fauna including ring-tailed lemurs, Malagasy hoopoes, Verraux’s sifakas and the elephant’s foot plant, and enjoy a traditional music performance as the sun sets. Stay at Relais de la Reine (or similar).

Day 13: Zombitse-Vohibsia National Park • Ifaty

Continue towards the west coast. Stop en route at Zombitse-Vohibsia National Park it may be possible to spot Appert’s tetrakas, one of the most endangered endemic birds on the island. The region is known for its large baobabs and traditional family tombs, central to Malagasy beliefs and culture. Transfer to Ifaty, a coastal fishing village for your evening farewell dinner. Overnight at Les Dunes d’Ifaty (or similar)

Day 14: Fly to Antananarivo

Morning at leisure. Afternoon flight from Toliara to Antananarivo. Transfer to Palissandre Hotel & Spa (or similar) for 1 night.

Day 15: Fly to London via Addis Ababa

Morning at leisure. Afternoon flight to London, via Addis Ababa, with Ethiopian Airways.

Day 16: Fly to London via Paris

Early morning arrival in London.

Andasibe Hotel, Andasibe National Park
Built in the heart of the forest and situated close to the Analazamotra national park, the Andasibe Hotel has a very natural feel and overlooks beautiful rice paddies. The 12 spacious and luxurious bungalows are all equipped with a television, minibar, private safe and a terrace. Other amenities include a restaurant and swimming pool.

Couleur Café, Antsirabe
Situated in the heart of Antsirabe, the Couleur Café is a charming property with five small houses located within its grounds. The family house can sleep up to four people while the four pavilions are each suitable for two people. Each pavilion is tastefully decorated and equipped with a private bathroom and fireplace. Breakfast is served in the guesthouse or your garden area, and dinner can be arranged with 24 hours’ notice.

Le Royal Palissandre, Antananarivo
This small, elegant hotel of only 46 rooms, takes its name from the Palissander tree, wood from which has been used to furnish the property, creating a feeling of warmth. The rooms are simply but stylishly furnished, featuring local handicrafts in order to give the property a uniquely Malagasy feel.

Les Dunes d’Ifaty, Ifaty
Les Dunes d’Ifaty is a charming hotel complex located in the fishing village of Mangily, directly overlooking the Mozambique Channel and its coral reef. Built in a traditional style, using local materials, the 19 villas and 22 rooms are set amid 6 hectares of tropical flora and indigenous plants. All of the rooms have a Creole inspired design and are equipped with a range of amenities. Some of the villa rooms have a view of the sea, but not all. The main building has a library, a bar, a restaurant and an outdoor patio area that serves as an extension to the restaurant, where guests can dine on international cuisine, seasonal specialities, seafood and locally inspired dishes. The large swimming pool is also a great place to relax and unwind.

Relais de la Reine, Ranohira
Located in the Souh west of Madagascar and hidden among a 16-hectare oasis bordering the Isalo massif, Le Relais de la Reine is a quaint French farmhouse-style lodge. Thirty cool and airy rooms are dotted among the manicured gardens and rocky sandstone formations. Features: 30 rooms, spa, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis-court and equestrian centre.

This tour is fully escorted throughout by a local tour manager from arrival in Antananarivo to day 13 in Toliara.

This tour is best suited to the hardier traveller as it includes some quite basic accommodation, longer and rougher road journeys and more strenuous activities, such as trekking.
