Burma (Myanmar) is a culturally rich land with a long history that is relatively untouched by tourism. This journey discovers the highlights of this diverse country, beginning with the majestic Shwedagon Pagoda in Rangoon (Yangon). The Burmese people’s deep-rooted belief in Buddhism and spirit worship is reflected in the thousands of pagodas in ancient Pagan (Bagan) and monasteries of Mandalay.
The tour finishes at the beautiful Inle Lake, famous for its floating villages and gardens, and the leg-rowers of the Intha tribe.
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 1 – To Rangoon: Fly from London to Rangoon, via Bangkok, with Thai Airways. (N)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 2 – Rangoon: Arrive in Rangoon, the former capital of Burma, and transfer to the Chatrium or similar for 2 nights. (N)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 3 – Rangoon: Morning excursion to Shwedagon Pagoda, Chaukhtatgyi Reclining Buddha and Kandawgyi Lake. Afternoon visit to Bogyoke Aung San (Scott) market, followed by a colonial walk from Sule Pagoda to the Rangoon riverfront. End the day at the Governor’s Residence hotel for high tea. (B, L)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 4 – To Mandalay: Early morning flight to Mandalay. On arrival, take a tour of Amarapura, including Mahagandayon monastery to see monks receiving food. Afternoon tour of Mandalay and see the sunset at Mandalay Hill. In the evening, there is a dinner and cultural show. Stay 2 nights at Mandalay Hill Resort or similar. (B, L, D)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 5 – Maymyo: Full-day trip to Maymyo (Pyin Oo Lwin), a former British hill station. Visit the local market, nearby plantations and villages. Take a horse-drawn cart to see grand colonial houses and visit National Kandawgyi Gardens. (B, L)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 6 – To Pagan: Today, visit U Bein Bridge, Inwa by horse-drawn cart and Sagaing Hill. In the afternoon, fly to Nyaung U and transfer to the Bagan Thande Hotel or similar for 3 nights. (B, L)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 7 – Pagan: Full-day tour of Pagan, highlights include Tayoke Pyay, Ananda Temple and local villages. In the evening, watch a puppet show with dinner. (B, D)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 8 – Pagan: Full-day tour of Pagan, including Nyaung U Market, Shwezigon Pagoda, Hgnet Pyit Taung, Lawkananda and Dhammayazika temples, and a local village. (B, L)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 9 – To Inle Lake: Morning flight to Heho and transfer to Inle Lake with excursions en route. Visit a local Intha family’s restaurant for lunch and a cooking demonstration. In the afternoon, take a tour of the floating villages, gardens and temples around Inle Lake. The Golden Land of Burma: Day 10 – Inle Lake: Morning excursion to the pagodas of Indein village. Afternoon at leisure with possibilities of exploring markets or participating in local festivities. (B, L)
The Golden Land of Burma: Day 11 – To Rangoon: This morning, fly to Rangoon and visit the National Museum. Farewell dinner at Le Planteur. Overnight at the Chatrium or similar. (B, L, D)
