Turkey - Highlights Of Turkey Cox & Kings
The tour combines the thriving capital, Istanbul, Cappadocia and Gallipoli with some of Turkey's less known sights including the picturesque southern Anatolian region and the country's most celebrated palaces, mosques and monuments. This tour takes in the historically significant towns of Ephesus, Gaziantep and Mardin.
Itinerary - Highlights Of Turkey Cox & Kings
Day 1 To Istanbul: Fly from London Heathrow to Istanbul with Turkish Airlines. Transfer to the Barcelo Saray Hotel for 2 nights. (N)
Day 2 Istanbul: Morning tour of Istanbul including Haghia Sofia, built as a church by Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, the Blue Mosque with its exquisite blue tiles, and the Hippodrome. Afternoon tour to Topkapi Palace and the underground Cistern. (B)
Day 3 To Canakkale: Morning drive to Canakkale. Tour of the Gallipoli battlefield, scene of the aborted Allied invasion of 1915. Visit Cape Helles, Suvla Bay and Anzac Cove. Stay at the Kolin Hotel for 1 night. (B, D)
Day 4 To Izmir: Depart from Canakkale and drive to Izmir stopping en route to visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Troy. Continue to Pergamon for a tour of the historic town, including visits to the Acropolis, the Asclepion and the Red Basilica. Transfer to the Izmir Movenpick for 1 night. (B)
Day 5 To Pamukkale: Morning drive to the ruins of Hierapolis and the travertines of precipitated calcium at Pamukkale. Continue to Laodicea, where the ruins of one of the seven biblical churches of Asia remain. Stay overnight at the Spa Hotel Colossae Thermal in Pamukkale. (B, D)
Day 6 To Aphrodisias & Kusadasi: Drive to Aphrodisias, one of the most beautiful classical sites in Turkey. See the Temple of Aphrodite and the most complete stadium to have survived from the ancient world. Continue to Kusadasi and stay 2 nights at the Kismet Hotel. (B)
Day 7 Ephesus: Half day tour of Ephesus, once the main city of the Roman province of Asia. See one of the original Seven Wonders of the World, the Temple of Artemis, as well as the main site. Afternoon optional visit to the hillside town of Priene and the ancient Ionian ports of the Menderes Valley. (B, L)
Day 8 To Cappadocia: Morning transfer to Izmir airport for a flight to Cappadocia, via Istanbul, with Turkish Airlines. Transfer to the Dedeman Hotel for 2 nights. (D)
Day 9 Cappadocia: Full day tour of the region visiting the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Goreme National Park with its cave churches and Kaymakli, the underground city used as a refuge for early Christian settlers. The unique landscape with its fabled ‘fairy chimneys’ and rock formations is renowned for its dramatic beauty. (B, D)
Day 10 To Adana: Drive to Adana visiting the 10th century Eskigumus Monastery to see its frescoes and underground caves. A stop will also be made in the city of Tarsus, the scene of one of the first meetings between Mark Anthony and Cleopatra and the birthplace of St Paul the Apostle. Visit the ruins of his family house and its holy well. Stay 1 night at the Adana Hotel HiltonSA. (B)
Day 11 To Gaziantep: Morning visits to the 2nd century Roman bridge and the six minaret Sabanci Central Mosque, the largest in Turkey. Drive from Adana to Gaziantep and visit the Archaeological Museum that houses a large collection of ornate 2nd and 3rd century Roman mosaics and the fortress. Overnight at the Dedeman Hotel. (B, D)
Day 12 To Sanliurfa: Drive from Gaziantep to Sanliurfa, via Halfeti, famous for its black coloured roses. Stay 2 nights at the Manici Hotel. (B, D)
Day 13 Harran: Formerly a large city on the Eastern trade routes, Harran is now famous for its unique conical houses resembling beehives that are still inhabited. It was also the scene of the Battle of Carrhae between the Roman and Parthian Empires. View the ruins of Anatolia’s first university, the Roman city walls and the village Ethnography Museum. Return to Sanilurfa and visit the Pool of Abraham with its holy fish, the tomb of his birth, which is a holy site for Christians and Muslims and the castle and mosque complex. (B)
Day 14 To Mount Nemrut: Drive from Sanilurfa to Mount Nemrut, via the Ataturk Dam, a wonder of modern engineering. Late afternoon visit to the colossal statue heads of King Antiochus and the Greek gods at Mount Nemrut and see the sunset over Mesopotamia (weather and local conditions permitting). Overnight at the Zeus Hotel in Kahta for 1 night. (B, D)
Day 15 To Mardin: Morning drive from Kahta to Mardin via Diyarbakir, situated close to the Tigris River, and the largest city in southeastern Turkey. View the 2nd longest city walls in the world and the Grand Mosque. Continue to Mardin and stay 2 nights at the Artuklu Kervansarayi Hotel. (B, D)
Day 16 Mardin: Morning tour of the city including the Sabanci Museum, the Monastery and the City Museum. Afternoon at leisure or optional tour to Hasankefy, an endangered cave town. (B)
Day 17 To London: Morning transfer to Diyarbakir for a flight to London Heathrow, via Istanbul, with Turkish Airlines. (B)
