Kardamena & Kefalos, the most well known holiday destinations on Kos, belong to the municipality of Irakleides. Irakleides is the largest municipality on the island of Kos and the seat of the municipality is Antimacheia.
KARDAMAINA
Karadamena is situated approx. 30km from Kos town and just 7kms from the International airport at Antimachia. It has an immense sandy beach and is very popular with British holiday tourists. There are pubs, restaurants, bars, night clubs and a multitude of water sports. There is also a daily boat to the volcanic island of Nisyros.
Being built on the ancient settlement of Alasarna there is an amazing history to Kardamena. Archaeological treasures include the Temple of Apollo, the early Christian Basilicas and the Ancient Theatre.
KEFALOS
Kefalos is a beautiful village set on the western side of the island and is renowned for its stunning beach. It is 40 kilometres south-west of Kos town and has some 2500 residents. By antiquity, it was the first capital city of the island and as such has the ruins of an ancient castle. It also the ancient site of Palatia and the basilica of Ayios Stefano is at nearby Kamari. There is also the Monastery of Ayios Ioannis (Thimiano).
