Estonia - Journey Through The Baltic States Cox & Kings

Baroque & Art Nouveau Architecture • Tallinn, Riga & Vilnius • Beautiful Countryside

Since regaining independence in 1991 and recently joining the E.U., Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are flourishing. The countries’ rich and colourful history can be best appreciated in their capital cities, which have beautiful architecture, while the surrounding countryside features lakes, forests and wetlands, dotted with manor houses, medieval castles and splendid rococo churches.

Itinerary - Journey Through The Baltic States Cox & Kings

Day 1 To Tallinn: Late afternoon flight from London Heathrow to Tallinn, via Copenhagen, with SAS Scandinavian Airlines. Transfer to the Von Stackelberg Hotel for 3 nights. (N)

Day 2 Tallinn: Morning walking tour of Tallinn, one of northern Europe’s best preserved medieval towns. Founded in the early 13th century, Tallinn has been influenced by periods of Danish, German, Swedish and Russian control. Highlights include the Gothic town hall and square, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Toompea Castle, seat of Estonia’s parliament. Optional afternoon visit to the open-air museum at Rocca al Mare. (B)

Day 3 Tallinn: Full day at leisure or optional visit to Helsinki. (B)

Day 4 To Riga: Drive to Riga, stopping en route at the 13th century ruins of Sigulda Castle, Turaida Castle in the Gauja Valley and the beachside town of Pärnu. Stay 2 nights at the Monika Centrum Hotel in Riga. (B, L)

Day 5 Riga: Morning tour of Riga, the Baltic’s largest and perhaps most beautiful city. The city’s rich history has left a legacy of fine architecture, including Art Nouveau. Visits include the Romanesque Dome Cathedral, the castle, St Peter’s Church and the House of Blackheads. Afternoon at leisure. (B)

Day 6 To Klaipeda: Morning journey across Latvia to Lithuania. Visit the Amber Museum and the Hill of Crosses, a place of national pilgrimage. Continue to Klaipeda and stay 1 night at the Amberton Klaipeda Hotel. (B, L)

Day 7 Vilnius: Morning tour of Klaipeda, reminiscent of provincial Germany with its half-timbered houses. Continue to Vilnius and stay 2 nights at the Centrum Artis Hotel. (B)

Day 8 Vilnius: Morning tour of Vilnius, including Cathedral Square, the Gate of Dawn, St Casimir’s Church, the Holy Spirit Church, the Tolerance Centre and Gediminas Tower. Optional afternoon visit to the picturesque 14th century Trakai Castle. (B)

Day 9 To London: Early morning transfer to the airport and fly to London, via Copenhagen, with SAS Scandinavian Airlines. (B)

Note: Due to their layout and narrow, often cobbled streets, the cities of the Baltic States are best explored on foot. The tour is not recommended for those with limited mobility. This tour is escorted by experienced local guides in each destination.

Meal Basis: (B) = Breakfast, (L) = Lunch, (D) = Dinner, (N) = No Meals
